Whether you’re running to get healthy, improve speed or for charity you can be sure to find a wide variety of beginner to challenging running races in Tampa and St. Petersburg throughout the year. Below we will highlight a few races that are unique to the area and are a must for all Tampa Bay runners.
Gasparilla Distance Classic
This distance race is true to the spirit of Tampa, generally concluding the month and 1/2 long celebration of Gasparilla (aka- when the pirates invaded Tampa Bay). Participants can enjoy scenic views of the Bay and perhaps a couple of swashbuckling joggers along the way! This series offers a 5k, 15k, Half Marathon and several combination challenges. Entry fees vary per race. For March 2012 registration and dates visit the following link:

Oldsmar Taphouse 5K
Even if they negate each other, what’s not to love about beer and running? This event has grown substantially year over year and entry is pretty limited. Sponsored by The Taphouse on State Street, you run a pretty quick, flat 5k in the streets of Oldsmar on a Friday evening. If you can stomach it after almost 90 degree heat, have a beer or four and chat with fellow runners after the race. Check out more info for the June 2011 race:

Women’s Running Magazine Women’s Half Marathon & 5k
Attention gals, pals, moms and sisters! This race is a must for any female who is all about girl power. Your race is guaranteed to be filled with badass chicks who take running serious to fun loving power walked in pink tutus. This race boasts an ultimate goody bag with a winner’s medal and a removable charm. What we love more about this race is that proceeds benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Talk about doing something for a good cause! The race is generally held in late November in St. Petersburg. For this year’s race info:
